OPEN CALLS
Guest Furnaces
The Steering Committee for the National Conference on Contemporary Cast Iron Art and Practices invites all artists, professionals, and groups to operate their furnaces during the conference. There are two opportunities for guest furnaces; the first is as a production furnace for the conference, and the second is as a guest furnace bringing and pouring your own molds. It is highly educational and essential to have furnaces of different types running at the conference. If finances are tight, it is accepted and strongly encouraged to seek sponsorship from local businesses or donors. Work with committee representatives for any support needed.

Student Cupola
The Student Cupola Competition has been held at the Sloss conferences for a long time. (We are on a mission to figure out the first!) It is a chance for students to test and show off their skills alongside teams from several universities, colleges, and programs worldwide. The student teams design, build, and run their furnaces, make patterns, ram molds, and run a pour field.

All '25 Student Cupola spots have been filled. We are no longer accepting Student Cupola Applications!

Performances
The Steering Committee for the National Conference on Contemporary Cast Iron Art and Practices invites individual artists, groups, or industry professionals to submit proposals for performance.
This year, we are excited to call for artists to submit performance proposals that will be presented at Sloss Furnaces during the conference. We are interested in what you have been researching, creating, and your own ways of innovation. When thinking about your performance proposals, remember to center on accessibility and representation.
We are highly receptive to interdisciplinary proposals that do not solely utilize cast iron. We welcome considerate, thought-provoking and community-minded proposals for performance.
Proposals should consider what their audience could learn, relate to, and be inspired by. Submissions that have a diversity of voices will be given preference.
Unfortunately, there is no direct financial support for the open performances call at this time with the exception of one selected "headlining performance" that will be provided a $1,000 materials stipend. Early access, equipment support, and build help will be made available to selected performers in need. While creating proposals, keep in mind the theme of the conference is Skimming the Surface.

Workshops
The Steering Committee for the National Conference on Contemporary Cast Iron Art and Practices would like to invite all artists and professionals to submit proposals for workshops and instructors for the 2023 conference.
Workshops are offered to allow production and instruction in processes that may be unavailable or unfamiliar to attendees. Proposals for workshops must include an objective and/or overall goal of the workshop. They should also specify necessary tools and equipment, material cost per workshop attendee and the maximum number of workshop attendees. Workshops will be held during the week of the conference, and all projects and processes should be completable in that timeframe.
We encourage creativity and personalization and the inclusion of workshops teaching skills beyond traditional metal casting.

Core Workshops
The Steering Committee for the National Conference on Contemporary Cast Iron Art and Practices would like to invite experienced artists and professionals to submit applications to be instructors for core workshops for the 2025 conference. Core workshops include Multi-part Mold Making, Large Mold, and Ceramic Shell.
Workshops are offered to allow production and instruction in mold making processes that may be unavailable or unfamiliar to attendees. Applicants will be asked to complete a Google Form summarizing their mold making and teaching experience and the reasons for their interest in leading a workshop. Teaching experience does not have to be in academia. Workshops will be held during the week of the conference, and all projects and processes should be completable in that timeframe. We ask applicants to keep in mind the significant time investment required of workshop instructors.

Panels & Presentations
The Steering Committee for the National Conference on Contemporary Cast Iron Art and Practices invites individual artists, groups, or industry professionals to submit proposals for panels and presentations. Our 2025 conference theme is, Skimming the Surface. This theme emphasizes the idea that the more we know, the more we understand how much there is to learn. Our aim is to gather as artists, researchers, creators, and educators to share and celebrate our individual discoveries within the community in order to foster growth and development.

Demonstrations
This year, we are excited to call for artists to submit demonstrations that will be presented at Sloss Furnaces during the conference. We are interested in what you have been researching, creating, and your ways of innovation. When thinking about the presentation of your material and process, think about accessibility within your practice and presentation.
We are highly receptive to interdisciplinary proposals that do not solely utilize cast iron. Consider materials, processes, technical skills, and problem-solving solutions for all demos that could benefit the greater community of cast iron artists. As we think and process these past few years, we must shift and include dealing with limited resources and understanding how precious time and resources are in our thought process. Proposals should consider their audience and how they can benefit upcoming artists with inside knowledge of how established professionals set up their workflow. Also, consider methods that would otherwise be limited to a specific production space because of specialty equipment needs.
