Frequently Asked Questions

ABOUT
What are the conference dates?

The conference will be held April 3 - 6, 2019. Registration opens at 8:30 am and events start at 9:00 am on Wednesday, April 3. Certain workshops start on Tuesday morning. See Workshops and Student Cupola Contest FAQs below.

Where is the conference held?

The conference is held at Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark, 20 32nd St N, Birmingham, AL 35222

Why should I come to the conference?
a) I don't really know anything about pouring iron; or
b) I already know a ton about pouring iron.

An artist hero of ours, the late gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson, once remarked,"When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro!"By this, he meant that in times of change or upheaval, anyone can make a legitimate business from their own personal vision, however different it may be.

That's what this conference is about for the artists, educators, students, and craftspeople who gather every other year at Sloss. We share information so that we can all be better at making a living doing what we love. Everyone is welcome, from shiny novice to gritty ironmonger, to convene in the heart of iron's strange magic, develop a professional and technical network spanning the globe, and build skills and friendships that will last a lifetime across professions.

Read more below for answers to questions on each of the areas featured at the conference...

REGISTRATION

How much does the conference cost to attend?

Early Registration (ends March 3) - $85

Registration (after March 3) - $120

All Workshops - $145 (each) plus materials where applicable

All Mini Workshops - $75 (each) plus participant sourced materials where applicable

Camping - $35 per person

Student Cupola Competition - $60 per team

Day Rate - $35 per day

How do I register?

To register online, visit the registration store and add the registration fee to your cart along with any other applicable items such as workshops or awesome shirts, then checkout using bank card or PayPal.

To register on site, show up with your money in hand and we’ll take it! Cash, check, credit cards, and spanish doubloons are acceptable forms of payment. We will not trade iron for registration fees. Sorry.

What am I paying for?

Conference registration grants access to all portions of the program except individual workshops and mini workshops, which require an additional registration fee, and the cost of materials, i.e., iron, sand, etc. Your registration includes a conference program, a name tag, and some other cool swag, the keynote address, closing night meal, plus all the panels, exhibitions, demos, performances, and iron pours you can shake a stick at!

To attend the conference AND take a workshop, pay both the registration fee AND the workshop fee. To participate in the student cupola contest, have the team captain pay the $60 team fee. To camp on site at Sloss, pay the camping fee. This fee is per person, and not per school, per carload, or per crew. C’mon.

I want to bring molds to be poured by a guest furnace crew. What should I do?

Bring it! Please preregister your mold(s) online here or when you arrive at the conference with our Mold Master Crew! ALL PARTICIPANTS are responsible for the cost of iron IN ADDITION TO REGISTRATION as follows, unless you are enrolled in a workshop:

What is the official conference hotel?

We did a little better than an official conference hotel. We got HOTELS.COM to get deals on ALL OF THEM!! Check out our event page at https://groups.hotels.com/EventPage5040797 and set yourself up in style. Besides, no one hangs at the hotel anyway. The action is allllll at Sloss!

SCHEDULE

I can't wait to see the conference schedule. I may die from the anticipation! What should I do?

Awwwwwww . . .  Bless your heart. Back in the dark ages (1988 - 2015), in order to find out the conference schedule, you had to show up and be handed your program. We're finally entering the 21st Century with all this newfangled technology and now have the presenters posted. LUCKY YOU! The schedule of events is now live!

GO SEE FOR YOURSELF!! Demos! Performances! Panels & Presentations! Workshops! Guest Furnaces!

If you did not make the deadline for the juried exhibitions, figure out what is going on in your life that you can't even submit work to this conference that ACCEPTS EVERYONE. For the 2021 conference, get yer ass in gear and send us some pictures!! We accept work up until March 15 for the curated exhibitions.

Do I have to attend the conference to participate in exhibitions?

It's the only way.

When can I install my work in the exhibition?

All works will be installed during the conference, open for exhibition on Friday night as part of the all-iron art walk, and loaded out on Sunday.

Do you ship?

No, we will not ship work. COME TO THE CONFERENCE.

I am bringing metal! See you there!

That's not really a question, but we hear this a lot. Furnace masters and conference attendees, PLEASE LEAVE YOUR IRON AT HOME. Sloss has the most succulent, juicy, melt-in-your-furnace iron EVER, plus we have the finest Birmingham crafted coke and clean burning propane for each furnace.

Each participant who has a casting poured pays a flat rate by weight for materials that includes iron, coke, and propane costs. Fees are paid through our Mold Master Crew, and it’s a great deal!! See our rates, above. That means Guest Furnace masters get to run high quality metal on site with hotter-than-the-devil coke and save on transportation costs!!

2021 CONFERENCE

When is the next conference?

The next National Conference on Contemporary Cast Iron Art & Practices will be held April 1 - 4, 2021 at Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark in Birmingham, Alabama. BE THERE!!!

What if I need more metal in my life before then?

This is why we are friends!! Explore opportunities at Sloss Metal Arts! Definitely come to the conference, make new friends, and work your ass off at pours all through the year together. We also advise building your own furnace, running the hell out of it, and bringing it to the next conference.

How do I get involved in planning the next conference?

We want you!! Open calls for chair elect and steering committee members will be announced on social media and posted at nccciap.com. Submit your info and get in the game! Each volunteer committee member is asked for a 2-conference commitment. All planning is done by email and phone and in full committee conference calls once a month. Committee members must be on-site the entire week of each conference. It's a lot of work, but it's awesome!

Our work benefits Sloss Metal Arts and furthers their outreach and education mission. We plan the conference so that our field can grow by making art in workshops, presenting ideas and techniques in panels and demos, showing work in exhibitions, composing moving performances, running sweet furnaces, and building friendships and professional networks that will last a lifetime.

How do I become a presenter at the next conference?

Great question! Answer the open calls for content to propose or lead a workshop, give a demonstration, deliver a panel or presentation, bring a guest furnace, give a performance, enter the student cupola contest, and submit work to the exhibitions. We also appreciate those who want to do more than just one thing! Sharing knowledge, techniques, experiences, and our work as artists is what the conference is all about. We need you!

SOCIAL MEDIA & OUTREACH

Does the conference have pages on Facebook and Instagram?

You know it! Follow our Facebook and Instagram accounts for all the information on conference open calls, exhaustive planning efforts, and amazing content featured at the National Conference on Contemporary Cast Iron Art & Practices.

I took a bunch of sweet photos at the conference! Where do I share them?

We LOVE photos!! 1) Contact our Social Media & Outreach team to arrange upload and credit. 2) Tag photos on Facebook and Instagram with #nccciap and #slossmetalarts. 3) Print and show 'em - that's ART!!

How can I become a sponsor for the conference?
