Student Cupola Awards

Oscar

Named in honor of Meredith "Butch" Jack. For the no-frills, yet highly functional furnace. Maybe a little rough on the outside, but clever and elegant where it counts.

Butch Jack adamantly believed that a cupola is simply a tool in service to making sculpture. He often bristled at the concept of overly aestheticized furnaces, and certainly at anyone who would claim them to be ensouled. The cupola needs to run well and produce good iron: no more, no less. He often articulated this by making furnaces out of garbage cans, aptly naming them "Oscar" (The Grouch).

Spiral Mold Test

This award will go to the team whose metal goes the farthest in the square spiral mold, one of the provided patterns that will be made on-site.

Production

This award will go to the team with the highest Sloss production item yield.

Community Choice

This award will go to the team that receives the most votes from the competition’s spectators. (Voting will take place after all teams have completed their campaigns.)

First Metal

This award will go to the first team to tap a full well successfully. (Don’t rush; let the furnace do its thing. When metal comes out of the slag hole, and you are ready to tap, let the staff know so we can indicate the time!)

Catwalk

This award will go to the team whose furnace is the most unique, innovative, and/or well-designed.

Wolf Pack

This award will go to the team that best represents teamwork and camaraderie from when they arrived to clean up.

School Spirit

This award will go to the team with the best support from the sidelines. They receive the most support from their school, the most people cheering them on during the competition, the most supportive decorations and signs, etc.

Thank you to our sponsors!
